What is Assisted Living?

What is assisted living? If you are currently taking care of a family member that cannot attend to their own daily needs, you may want to look into assisted living a bit further.

Assisted living is a type of service available for those people that need help tying their shoes; dressing; eating; going to the bathroom; and bathing. While most types of assisted living facilities are located within retirement homes, some assisted living centers are located outside of nursing homes (usually next door). Also, you may be able to hire a person to come into your home in order to help out with daily tasks, though this sort of service can be far more expensive. To further understand the original question (what is assisted living?), outlining some assisted living philosophies may help.

According to the Assisted Living Federation of America, all assisted living facilities should abide by the following rules: offer reasonably priced care; emphasize independence; take extra care with each person; allow every person to choose their own activities; and notify family members when extra action is needed. How many people currently live in assisted living homes? Over one million Americans currently reside in assisted living centers ... though residents can be both young and old.

Though most people think that assisted living is for the elderly (and the majority of patients are older), some people living with assisted living homes are younger. What is assisted living when it pertains to younger people? Not unlike the services that older people require, some younger people need help with daily activities too. If you are looking to place a younger person, consider finding an assisted living location that includes younger activities. Assisted living may be the only option for some people, though placing a loved one in an assisted living center is always hard.

If you are struggling to play the part of an around the clock care giver, assisted living may be your only option. Rest assured, the majority of assisted living homes are actually good for your loved one. While a person that needs constant attention may not get any exercise sitting at home, an assisted living center will become a sort of social center – which, may be very beneficial to a person’s health.

If you want to answer the question, “what is assisted living?” in its fullest extent, take the time to visit some facilities in your area today. Though placing a family member in assisted living may be a difficult choice to make, once you have made this decision you can breathe easier – assisted living may just be the best way to care for the ones that you love.
